Welcome To Science Lab!

Mrs. Benavides in the lab

Hello!  I am Mrs. Benavides.  Here I am helping a student get ready for our Science Fair 2008.  This is my third year as Science Lab teacher, and I am currently working on my Master's Degree in Education, focusing in Administration and Instructional Design.  I am always learning a lot about science too!

If you need to contact me my email is abenavides@st-thomasmore.org and my phone number here at school is (919) 969-6723.

Here in the Sceince Lab we go from black holes in outer space to earthworm holes in our ecosystem in the school yard!  We study it all.  Labs are hands-on, three dimensional, and hopefully fun for all students, and for parent volunteers.  The most important thing is we all try to learn something!

Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, First and Second grades have science labs once a month.  Third Grade is offered science lab twice a month.  Fourth Grade comes into the science lab weekly.  Fifth grade has double science lab time once every two weeks and we often go outdoors to study our watershed ecosystem in every way our curriculum demands.  Visit our website at:  www.stmscience.wordpress.com

This year we are very lucky in fifth grade to have Chris Hartle working with our fifth grade scientists.  He is the son of Maureen Hartle for whom the lower school Science Lab is named, The Maureen Hartle Memorial Science Lab.  He is an undergraduate at UNC Chapel Hill and generously donates his time and expertise to help our groups study the watershed ecosystem.  Many thanks to Chris and his classmate Catherine for their hours of volunteer work!

We are planning a fun Science Night in the school gym to show some of the wonderful things we do on Tuesday April 28th, the last Tuesday in April.  This year we will not conduct a science fair with judging and awards, but student projects and experiments will be on display.  Students have begun work on these projects and experiments already!

We hope to have fun science events for children, and speakers and demonstrations during the days of that Science Night week to supplement our displays.  Come volunteer in the lab and see what's happening!
