Jim Layne and I arrived in Charleston, W. Va. Saturday morning and gave 385 shoebox gifts to the children of Dingess and the surrounding area. They were so very pleased to receive your generous gifts; again your gift will be the greatest gift these children will receive this year, for many the only gift.
Some information I gathered while there:
* In the southern part of Logan County and the northern part of Mingo County there are 6,000 children at risk for hunger.
* There are 190 children at Dingess Elementary School; 187 of those children qualify and receive free breakfast and lunches.
* Three years ago there were 3 “Backpack Kids”/ Goshen Kids, now they are able to serve 194 children. These are children who take a backpack of food home each weekend because there is not enough food to sustain them throughout the weekend. Their backpack will contain raisins, cereal bars and “pop-top” food.
* One child that we filled a shoebox for lost her house to a fire Thursday night. They said the housing conditions are so bad that the houses can’t be saved; they just quickly burn to the ground. I was given 2 cash donations, which went to help this family. I was also given over $200 worth of Wal-Mart gift cards; they will go to the families with the greatest need.
God is smiling on you and your family for helping the last of these. I thank you and God bless you for your great kindness and generosity.
Mrs. Patti Wagner
