The 8th grade curriculum covers United States history, government, civics, and geography.  North Carolina is also included in this study.  We begin with migration of ancient people to North and South America and quickly review the ancient civilizations of the two continents.  As we progress through the beginning years of our nation, the students learn about the struggles that led to the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War.  The Constitution is studied in depth.  Classes learn how the country has developed into the nation it is today.  Our textbook -- The American Journey -- often highlights the part that North Carolina has played in the development of the United States.  I also have a North Carolina textbook for the students to use.  Many of the subjects that the 8th grade studies are seen by the students on the yearly trip to Washington, DC in the spring.

Homework

1. Homework will be assigned when necessary. It may be given every night.

2. Occasionally homework will be assigned on weekends. It is to be done no matter how busy a student’s weekend may be.

3. Homework that is turned in late will be accepted, but the grade will be lowered.

4. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the homework policy listed in the handbook. Remember that requested homework given in advance if a student is on a trip MUST be turned in the day the student returns or a grade of zero will result.
